Mac fax guide

Your Mac can prepare the fax without becoming a fax machine.

macOS can save printable documents as PDF and Preview makes long packets easy to inspect. The browser then hands the prepared file to the fax service.

Prepare the file on Mac.

Use the application export command when it offers PDF. Otherwise, macOS can save printable content as a PDF from the print dialog. Give the transmission copy a clear filename and open that exact file in Preview.

Device workflow

From Mac to fax in four checks.

01

Save the transmission copy

Export or print the final document to PDF. Keep the editable original separately in case a correction is needed.

02

Review it in Preview

Use the thumbnail sidebar to check order, orientation, blank pages, signatures, and the total page count.

03

Upload from Safari or another browser

Enter the current destination number and email, choose the reviewed PDF, and wait for preparation to finish.

04

Verify the prepared fax

Compare the final count and destination before paying. Keep the status link and result email with your PDF.

Mac preflight

  • Preview shows every page and annotation
  • The PDF is not password protected
  • Landscape pages remain readable and correctly rotated
  • The upload came from the intended Finder folder

Device questions

Before you upload.

Can I fax from Preview on a Mac?

Preview is useful for reviewing and arranging the PDF. Upload that PDF in a browser to transmit it without fax hardware.

Does a Mac need a fax app?

No. A current browser can upload the prepared PDF directly.

Can I combine several PDFs before faxing?

Yes. Preview can combine pages, but reopen the result and confirm its order and page count before upload.
